Shuho Yamakawa: Biography

Shuho Yamakawa was born in 1898 in Kyoto and sadly departed in 1944. Under the tutelage of Kiyokata Kaburagi, Yamakawa delved into the realms of painting and printmaking.

His fellow students included notable artists such as Hasui Kawase, Ito Shinsui, and Torii Kotondo.

Bijin-ga

Following in the footsteps of his friends Ito Shinsui and Torii Kotondo, Shuho Yamakawa specialized in 'bijin-ga' or images of beautiful women. His artistic style, while slightly more traditional compared to his peers, produced woodblock prints, some of which were published by the renowned shin hanga publisher Watanabe Shozaburo.
