Max Klinger, a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor, was born into a deeply religious family in Germany on February 18, At the age of 18, he began studying drawing in Karlsruhe under Carl Gussow, a genre painter.

During this time, he also created a series of drawings of ancient statues.

Moving to Berlin in , Klinger came under the influence of Adolf Menzel's historicized style.
